Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at Vera
The Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) is a dedicated facility for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), operated at the University of Vienna since 1996. The principle of AMS with VERA and the advantage of measuring long-lived radioisotopes by atom counting (AMS) rather than decay counting (ß decay) is described. A brief overview on AMS applications is also presented.
متن کاملAccelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) in plutonium analysis
The paper summarizes the results of the 240Pu/239Pu atomic ratio studies in atmospheric fallout samples collected in 1986 over Gdynia (Poland) as well as three Baltic fish species collected in 1997 using the accelerator mass spectrometry. A new generation of AMS has been developed during last years and this method is an efficient and good technique to measure long-lived radioisotopes in the env...
متن کاملEcologically Clean Accelerator for Nuclear Physics Research
Rigid ecological requirements to human activity including industry and science force to search for specific technologies to reduce the undesired influence on nature. High intensity accelerators belong to the objects that produce radioactive waste. We have studied rf accelerator schema where the electron beam used is directed again into the same accelerator with appropriate phase in order to red...
متن کاملAccelerator mass spectrometry for biomedical research.
Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the most sensitive method for detecting and quantifying rare long-lived isotopes with high precision. In this chapter, we review the principles underlying AMS-based biomedical studies, focusing on important practical considerations and experimental procedures needed for the detection and quantitation of (14)C- and (3)H-labeled compounds in various experime...
متن کاملAccelerator mass spectrometry – from DNA to astrophysics
A brief review of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is presented. The present work touches on a few technical aspects and recent developments of AMS, and describes two specific applications of AMS, the dating of human DNA with the C bomb peak and the search for superheavy elements in nature. Since two extended general reviews on technical developments in AMS [1] and applications of AMS [2] wi...
